Hello.
It’s been a minute.
When last we spoke, I mentioned a change in the format and schedule around here. I didn’t actually intend for it to be that drastic. But here we are.
So what happened? Well, if I’m being honest, I started chasing an idea that I was really excited about and lost all momentum for my other creative projects.
Momentum is a strange thing. If you’re into sports, you hear about it all the time. “The momentum has shifted…” is a common trope the announcers will throw out there. I used to think it was a bunch of nonsense or an excuse people make for why their team is losing, but when you experience it, you know how real it is.
Newton’s First Law of Motion says that objects in motion stay in motion. I believe that’s true for everything. When you have a purpose and you’re pushing for a goal, that momentum of small actions builds and it really is like rolling a heavy ball down a hill.
But the other side of that is… when you stop, and all your momentum is gone, it is really hard to get that ball rolling again.
What makes it worse is when you know how easy it was to roll the ball down the momentum hill. Without that momentum, everything is a struggle and simple tasks that you did, almost on auto pilot, become daunting.
It really is a mental game. When you feel that momentum shift, it affects you. You start having thoughts like “maybe this just isn’t for me anymore.”
This is when most people quit.
For me, I’ve been pushing toward a different goal. I’ve gotten more serious about building my illustration portfolio and realized I wasn’t where I needed to be.
That’s what I’ve been working on. Lots of learning. Lots of drawing. Not a lot of putting my work out there.
I’m still on a journey with my illustration work (more on that in a minute) but I’ve been feeling the itch to get back to writing and creating for this newsletter. It’s like going to the gym regularly for a few years and then suddenly you stop. You start to miss the improvements, and the feeling of accomplishment that you get when you see actual growth. Sometimes you even miss the pain and the struggle.
So, I guess, to make the long story short… I’m getting back into this.
What does that look like?
Good question. The focus of this newsletter will shift a bit to where I currently am in my artistic endeavors. That’s where the illustration journey comes in. I’m still pushing toward the goal of getting more illustration work. On that note, I’ve decided to rebrand this newsletter to reflect that. I’m going to take the name that I came up with for my illustration work a couple years ago (when I was laid off from my day job and had more time to focus on it). I’ll also still publish comics here. Change Log isn’t dead, just on a bit of a hiatus, so if you’re here for the comics, stay tuned and this will be the place for the latest announcements, previews, etc.
The next time you hear from me it’ll be from the new and improved newsletter called Sketch Foundry.
Once again, I apologize for the long delay and I hope you’ll stick around for the new and improved newsletter!
Have a great week!
